TWO CNY COMPANIES TO RECEIVE GRANTS The Post-StandardWednesday, October 31, 2001 By Mark Weiner, Staff writer A Syracuse research center that focuses on the indoor environment took a big step Tuesday toward its goal of improving public health and growing local jobs. The New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center Inc., awarded its first matching grants to help Central New York companies develop new products and services. A total of $250,000 in grants will be split evenly by Cleanroom Systems Inc. of Cicero and O'Brien & Gere of DeWitt, said Lee Davis, executive director of the NYIEQ. Each company will match the grants with at least $125,000 of its own research and development money, Davis said. Cleanroom Systems will use the grant to commercialize a new technology that improves the effectiveness and efficiency of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, Davis said. O'Brien and Gere's project will integrate ventilation and air pollution control systems with new sensor technology, said Terry Brown, the company's chief executive officer. "For business, this is fantastic," Brown said Tuesday, adding that he expects the project to create 50 jobs for his company within three years. The two winning projects were selected from a field of 18 proposals that have the potential to create 540 jobs, said Davis of the NYIEQ center. The center is a partnership of more than 50 companies and academic, research, and medical institutions in Central New York's environmental building systems industry. The center is based at SUNY Upstate Medical University at the Institute for Human Performance. Officials from the Metropolitan Development Association, a private nonprofit economic development group, say the center could generate more than $500 million and create about 6,000 new jobs in Central New York by the end of the decade.
